Don't put a wall!

The border, also known as “the wall” is built to keep illegal immigrants from entering the country. The border will harm both countries in numerous ways. First, this border is going to cost the United States a whole lot of money. According to the budget proposal Trump’s down payment for the wall will be $2.6 billion and an estimated cost of $6.5 million a mile for pedestrians walking to the other side and an estimated amount of $1.6 million a mile for vehicle crossing. Not to mention that one day it will have to be replaced or it will fall just as other barriers. The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 and fell overnight in 1989, all that work and money has gone to waste in less than a day. The benefits that come with the border do not outweigh the cost. The number of Border Patrol Agents are increasing more and more every year. In fact, Trump wants to hire 15,000 more border patrol agents and ICE agents. A Border Patrol’s job is often dull, chasing footprints, staring at monitors, and shuffling paperwork yet roughly one-third of the staff have served in the military. The Border Patrols requirements don't require a college degree or any actual knowledge of the situations occurring. In the Border Patrol staff, there are many oppressed people with no compassion. Reading a book about the border isn’t the same as seeing it with your own eyes, people that are trying to cross aren’t usually harmful people, the people that are trying to pass are the victims, and all they want is to live a safe and better life. The Border Patrol agents should be required to be knowledgeable about the actions they are taking.  But, the United States will also have more problems with this wall. The fact of the matter is that we already have problems with the fence that is up right now because it was constructed north of the river which means it sliced part of the nature reserve, a part of a golf course, and a university campus. The fence also has a camera that is said to be pointing in the wrong direction at times which causes citizens to feel exposed. In conclusion, building a wall between the two countries is dumb, and the citizens of both countries should have a say in the idea because it affects both countries.

  1. I also believe that building a wall is not a great idea. There is no need for building the wall because of the many problems it is causing and the problems it will cause. Mentioning the job of the border patrol and the requirements there are in order to get the job just goes to show how they don't care and shows how much they are trying to keep the border from falling apart and from keeping immigrants out. I like how you mentioned the Berlin wall and everything that had to be done just to build a wall that did not stand for long.

  2. I too agree the wall is quite foolish. The United States is already in a debt for trillions; therefore, constructing a wall that will cost $2.6 billion seems outrageous.
Some people believe the wall is a reasonable way to keep immigrants out. First off, not all immigrants are bad people--most of them aren't! With that said, I agree with what you said about border patrol being more informed that way they don't act inhumanly... reading a book is not enough.
The Berlin Wall was a great example. Our wall may cost $2.6 billion, but if we want to avoid an overnight collapse like Berlin, we would constantly have to tender to the wall. This would result in more money spewing out. Whereas, instead, we could use that money for other more purposeful reasons.
I do agree with you about the wall impacting both countries, therefore both should have a say.
